Admiral Richard A. Yates

Richard Augustus Yates entered the Royal Navy in 1803. He served aboard the Ardent and the Quebec during the Napoleonic War and later aboard the Blenheim, the Illustrious, the Britannia and the Neptune. He was present at the Battle of Copenhagen in 1807 and took part in the unsuccessful Walcheren Campaign of 1809.

He retired in 1864 with the rank of Admiral. He died on 6 February 1876 at his residence in Margaret Street, London, leaving an estate valued at £8000. 

According to his extensive obituary in the Naval & Military Gazette (16 February 1876), '[h]e became rear-admiral on the reserve list in 1854, vice-admiral in 1860, and admiral in 1864.'
