Admiral John Roberts-Gawen

John Charles Gawen Roberts-Gawen was born 25 August 1787. On 13 June 1815 he reached the rank of Captain in the Royal Navy. When he retired on 4 October 1862, he held the rank of Admiral.
On 31 May 1817 he married Charlotte Dallas, eldest daughter of the Honourable Mr Justice Dalls, at St George's, Bloomsbury.
He died, aged 87, on 21 November 1874 at his residence, 29 Park Street, Mayfair, London. He left an estate valued at £60,000.
'He was present at the defence of Gaeta, and the reduction of Capri, attack on Fort Licosa, at the passage of the Dardanelles, and afterwards at Copenhagen in 1807. He was senior lieutenant of the Shearwater in her escape from the French fleet off Toulon in 1810, assisted at the siege of Tarragona, commanded a division of gunboats at the defence of Cadiz, and when commander of the Pylades was wounded in her boats in recapturing an East Indiaman in the Bay of Fundy in 1814' (Pall Mall Gazette, 26 November 1874).
