Captain Francis John Slade Gully

An inked inscription verso in a fine period hand reads: 'Capt. F. Slade Gully / Brigade Major / Saugor / 1862.'
Born on 30 September 1829 at St Austell in Cornwall, Francis John Slade Gully was the son of Reverend Samuel Gully, Rector of Berrynarber in Devon.
On 3 October 1861 at Cholderton in Wiltshire he married Eleanor Knatchbull, daughter of Reverend Wadham Knatchbull. The marriage produced a daughter, Eleanor, and a son, Francis (1863-1891).
Records held at the India Office of the British Library show that Francis John Slade Gully died of 'remittent fever' at Calcutta on 12 November 1864 and was buried the following day in the military burial ground of Fort William. At the time of his death he was a Captain in the Bengal Staff Corps.
