Sir John Chetwode

Sir John Newdigate Ludford Chetwode, 5th baronet. Born at Oakley Hall, near Mucklestone, Staffs. on 12 November 1788; succeeded 17 December 1845; Sheriff of Warwick. 1852; died Oakley Hall on 8 September 1873 at the age of 84.

On 10 September 1873 the Morning Post announced 'the death of Sir John N. L. Chetwode, Bart., which occured on the morning of the 8th inst. at Oakley, his seat in Staffordshire. the deceased gentleman was the eldest son of the late Sir John Chetwode, Bart., by the Lady Henrietta, daughter of George Harry, Earl of Stamford and Warrington. He was born in 1788, and succeeded to the baronetcy on the death of his father in 1845. The late Sir John married, first, in 1821, Elizabeth Juliana, daughter of the late Mr J. N. Ludford, of Anstey Hall, Warwickshire, whose name he assumed in 1826. By that lady, who died in 1859, he had no issue. He married, secondly, in 1861, Arabella Phillis, relict of Mr James Reid, of Lower Berkeley-street, the only child of the late Mr Samuel Denton. The deceased baronet is succeeded in the baronetcy by Lieutenant-Colonel George Chetwode, late of the 8th Hussars, eldest surviving son of the Rev. George Chetwode, rector of Ashton-under-Lyne, by Charlotte Anne, sister of the first Lord Hatherton. He was born in 1823, and married, in 1868, Alice Jane, second daughter of Mr M. T. Bass, M.P.'
