The Honourable Algernon Chichester
(1829-1885)

Identified verso in a period hand as 'The Hon. Algernon Chichester,' this is probably the Honourable Francis Algernon James Chichester, who served firstly in the 5th Bengal European Light Cavalry before transferring to the 94th Foot in 1863 and finally to the 7th Hussars in 1864. He retired with the rank of Captain in 1865.

Born on 17 November 1829, he was the fifth son of Arthur Chichester, 1st Baron Templemore and Lady Augusta née Paget, daughter of the 1st Marquess of Anglesey.

He married, firstly, Elizabeth Ann Dixon, daughter of George Dixon, on 21 February 1855. He married, secondly, Lady Emily Octavia Stewart, daughter of Randolph Stewart, 9th Earl of Galloway and Lady Harriett Blanche née Somerset, on 4 February 1875. His first marriage produced two children; his second, six.

Captain the Honourable Francis Algernon James Chichester died, aged 55, on 15 February 1885 at Glendine, Arthurstown, Co. Wexford in Ireland. He left a personal estate valued at £3196.
