An unidentified sitter

[This portrait does not appear in the Silvy daybooks in the archives of the National Portrait Gallery. It was possibly one of the sittings numbered 100 to 300, all of which were removed from Volume 1 before the daybooks were acquired by the gallery in 1904. The majority of these two hundred sittings were the series of theatrical portraits that Silvy took in the spring of 1860 to publicise his new studio. Many of the albumen prints from these sittings subsequently resurfaced, floated off their original mount, in the collection of theatrical photographic portraits assembled by Guy Tristram Little (died 1953), which were bequeathed to the Victoria and Albert Museum, but this portrait is not among them.]
