The Honourable Somerset John Gough-Calthorpe
(1831-1912)

Volume 1, page 76, sitting number 508.

[From an album compiled by the sitter's brother, the Honourable Augustus Gough-Calthorpe, later 6th Baron Calthorpe.]

Identified as 'Jack' in his brother's album, this is Augustus Gough-Calthorpe’s younger brother, Lieutenant Colonel the Honourable Someret John Gough-Calthorpe of the 5th Dragoon Guards.

Born on 23 January 1831, he was the fourth son of Frederick Gough-Calthorpe, 4th Baron Calthorpe, and Lady Charlotte Sophia Somerset, eldest daughter of the 6th Duke of Beaufort.

On 28 January 1862 at St George's in Hanover Square he married Mrs Frederick Crewe (née Eliza Maria Chamier), only child of Captain Frederick Chamier of the Royal Navy. His wife was the widow of Captain Frederick Crewe of the 7th Regiment of Madras Native Infantry, who had died at Secunderabad in India on 15 February 1859.

Two of his older brothers succeed as Baron Calthorpe, but both died childless. A third brother died at the age of sixteen. Jack Gough-Calthorpe succeeded as 7th Baron Calthorpe on 22 July 1910, at the age of 79. He died on 12 November 1912, aged 81, at his residence near Ryde on the Isle of Wight. He was succeeded by his only son.
