W.T. Roughton, Esq.
(1836-1918)
11 November 1861

Volume 5, page 232, sitting number 6421.

Born at Oporto in Portugal on 24 May 1836, William Thomas Roughton was the son of merchant William George Roughton. His mother was Martha Walker née Wood, fourth daughter of Thomas Wood of Leicester.

He does not appear on either the 1861, the 1871 or the 1881 census, so presumably he was living and working abroad, probably in Portugal, for most of his adult life.

At the time of the 1891 census he was living with his unmarried sister Martha, a cook and a housemaid at 18 Woburn Road, Bedford, Bedfordshire. He described himself as a ‘Retired Merchant.’ Ten years later he gave ‘Wine Shipper (Retired)’ as his profession.

William Thomas Roughton never married. He died on 28 June 1918 at 46 Goldington Avenue, Bedford, leaving an estate valued at £13,338.
