The sitter is identified by an inked inscription verso, in French, written by his mother. He was born on 1 May 1861 and he died on 5 December 1865. The carte was given by Mme F. Bonnet to a Mme Joséphine G. on 18 December 1865 as a 'souvenir d'une mère à une mère.'

An American Civil War tax stamp obscures the photographer's backplate but given that the child was buried in the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery at Colma in California, the likeliest place for the photograph to have been taken is San Francisco.
