Duc de Montebello

Louis Napoléon Lannes was the eldest son of Maréchal Jean Lannes (1769-1809), the first duc de Montebello. Under Louis-Philippe, he alternated between ministerial positions and diplomatic posts, including Minister for Foreign Affairs in 1839 and ambassador to Naples in 1840. In the latter capacity he negotiated the marriage of the duc d’Aumale with Marie Caroline de Bourbon (1844). Under Napoléon III, he served as the French ambassador to St Petersburg (1858-1864). He married an English woman.
He died at the château de Mareuil-sur-Ay (Marne) on 18 July 1874.
