Baron Charles de Talleyrand
(1821-1896)

Charles Angélique, baron de Talleyrand-Périgord, was a French diplomat, most notably serving as Ambassador to St Petersburg. On 11 June 1862 he married a Russian aristocrat, Véra Bernardaky.

Disderi's catalogue published in March 1861 mentions him under Sommités, describing him as 'ambassadeur à Turin.'

'The families of Talleyrand, Standish, Luynes, Chabonnes, and Radziwill are in mourning because of the death of Count Charles de Talleyrand-Périgord, chief of the thrid branch of the Talleyrand family. For the past few years the Count de Talleyrand has lived in Florence, but each spring he came to Paris, where he was always welcome. The Count de Talleyrand belonged to the type of diplomatists very seldom seen in modern times; he began his career under the auspices of his great uncle, the Prince de Talleyrand, and was attaché in London, then Secretary in Madrid, Lisbon, and St Petersburg, and Minister at Weimar, Baden-Baden, Turin, and Brussels. In 1862 he was named Ambassador in Berlin, and afterwards represented France in St Petersburg.

'The Count de Talleyrand married Mlle Vera Bernadaki, sister of M. Bernadaki, so well known to Parisian society. His two daughters are the Countess d'Antioche and Mlle Marie de Talleyrand. Count de Talleyrand's sister is Mrs Stanley, who lives in England during the summer and spends the winter in Cannes. The Count de Talleyrand was also a Senator during the Empire, and now of these Imperial Senators there remain only the Duke de Bassano, M. Henri Chevreau, and M. Boitelle' (The Gentlewoman, 7 March 1896).
