Lady Leven
(1806-1887)

Identified verso as ‘Lady Leven,' this is the second wife of John Thornton Leslie-Melville, 9th Earl of Leven. Born Sophia Thornton, fourth daughter of Henry Thornton, MP, she married John Thornton Leslie-Melville on 23 April 1834. One of her sons eventually succeeded his half-brother as 11th Earl of Leven.

Sophia, Countess of Leven and Melville, died on 28 June 1887, aged 81. The death was registered in the Wandsworth district of London.
