Prosper de Chasseloup-Laubat
(1805-1873)

Of an ancient noble family, his father was General François de Chasseloup-Laubat, a count and senator under the first Empire and a marquis under the Restoration; his godparents were Napoléon I and the Empress Joséphine.

From 24 November 1860 until 1867 he was the ministre de la marine et des colonies, during which time he presided over the transformation of the French fleet.

On the death of his older brother, Prudent, in 1863, he inherited the title of marquis.
