Charles Gounod
(1818-1893)

Gounod’s operas include Sappho (1851), Faust (1859), Philémon et Baucis (1860), and Roméo et Juliette (1867). He also wrote sacred songs, masses, and an oratorio, The Redemption (1882). His music has great lyrical appeal and emotional power, and it inspired many French composers of the late nineteenth century.
