According to an inked inscription recto in the lower margin, the Belgian soprano Marie Saxe is seen here as she appeared in Meyerbeer's Robert le diable.

First performed at the Paris Opéra on 21 November 1831, the plot had only a superficial connection to the mediaeval legend of the knight who discovers he is really the son of the devil.
