Victor Warot
in Mermet's Roland à Roncevaux
The Belgian opera singer Victor Alexandre Warot began his career as a lyric tenor but grew into a fine dramatic singer. He was particularly known for his portrayal of Wagner and Meyerbeer heroes.
He is seen here dressed as 'un patre de Pyrénées' [a Pyrenean shepherd] in Roland à Roncevaux, a role he created at the Académie impériale de la musique on 3 October 1864.
