J. W. Walrond
(1818-1889)
4 July 1862

Volume 8, page 176, sitting number 10,326.

Born John Walrond Dickinson at Tiverton on 1 March 1818, his name was legally changed to John Walrond Walrond. He was the Member of Parliament for Tiverton from 1865 to 1868. He gained the title of 1st Baronet Walrond of Bradfield, Devon, in 1876.

He married the Honourable Frances Caroline Hood, daughter of Samuel Hood, 2nd Baron Bridport and Charlotte Mary Nelson, Duchesa di Bronté, on 20 May 1845.

He appears on the 1861 census, living with his wife, five daughters and infant son at Bradfield House, Uffculme [Devon]. He described himself as 'Landowner, occupier of 200 acres, employing on Farm Garden 20 men, 2 boys and 4 women.' There were, in addition, 10 servants living in the house, not counting a bailiff, shepherd, dairymaid and carter living at Bradfield Cottage, presumably also part of the estate.

Sir John Walrond Walrond died on 23 April 1889. The following day his obituary in The Times read: 'Sir John Walrond, of Bradfield, Devon, died yesterday morning at Cannes, whither he had gone for the benefit of his health. He was in his 71st year. During a great part of his life he was a prominent member of the Conservative party in Devon. He was returned as member for Tiverton in 1865, in conjunction with Lord Palmerston, but did not offer himself again in the general election of 1868. He leaves a widow and several sons and daughters. The baronetcy, conferred in 1876, passes to Colonel W.H. Walrond, member for the Tiverton Division of the county, and one of the Junior Lords of the Treasury.'
