This is therefore Mary Augusta Harriett Johnstone, who shortly after this portrait was taken became Lady Buxton, wife of Sir Robert Jacob Buxton (1829-1888).
Born in 1846 at Standstead in Essex, she was the only child of Lieutenant-Colonel John Johnstone. On 4 December 1865 at St Peter's in Eaton Square she married Sir Robert Jacob Buxton, 3rd Bt. The marriage produced two daughters, Maud and Sybil.
The family appear on the 1881 census living at Shadwell Court at Rushford in Norfolk.
Sir Robert died on 20 January 1888, aged 59.
Lady Buxton appears on the 1911 census, a widow living at 32 Cadogan Place, Chelsea, with her unmarried daughter Sybil Mary Buxton and their seven servants.
She died, aged 66, on 9 August 1913 at Longmynd Hotel, Church Stretton, Shropshire. She left an estate valued at £37,918.
