849: A Street Scene in the Native Quarter of Djibouti, French Somaliland, East Africa.

Printed on the back of the mount is 'information' regarding the colony. This is French Somaliland. While its coastal regions are well known, there is much yet to be learned about the dangerous hinterland of savage Somaliland. There are places where European consuls dare not go and there are hiding places where it is almost certain Arab slavers pen their kidnapped blacks behind thick thorn-hedged stockades, for in spite of the League of Nations, a great slave trade is said to secretely pass through French Somaliland on its way from Ethiopia to the Arabian peninsula.
