The image is actually on the under side of the top sheet of glass. It is backed by a sheet of ruby glass, on the back os which the remains of another ambrotype of a young man sitting in chair outdoors can be made out. The two held together with a pinchbeck inner-frame. Otherwise unhoused.

At the back of the two sheets of glass is a similar sized sheet of cream-coloured paper, embossed with the photographer's blindstamp, C.Waters of Bowness, Windermere.
