| A gelatin silver print on glossy stock, most likely of the 1930’s or 1940’s, showing a (presumably) French athlete or bodybuilder in a studio pose. Although the sitter is unidentified on this particular print, I have seen another copy elsewhere, and on that copy the sitter was identified as Marcel Rouel.
Photographed by Studio Arax of 31, boulevard Raspail, Paris, identified by the studio’s details printed in the lower margin of the border, and verso by the studio’s wetstamp. [The wetstamp is the earlier, unboxed version.] A bodybuilder himself, Arax produced beautifully lit, classic studies of handsome athletes and bodybuilders, from the 1930’s to the late 1950’s. The print, including a narrow white border, measures 9.2” by 6.9” (236 mm by 176 mm). |
