Kate Terry
A carte-de-visite portrait of actress Kate Terry, a younger sister of Ellen Terry. She retired from the stage in 1867 when she married Arthur Lewis, but ‘at the height of her career she had been considered a better actress than her more famous sister, Ellen’ (Oxford Companion to the Theatre, 1951). She is seen here in a scene from Love’s Martyr, in which she appeared in 1866 with Henry Neville at the Royal Olympic Theatre, then under the management of Horace Wigan.

Photographed by the London Stereoscopic and Photographic Company.
