|A carte-de-visite showing four Egyptian women ‘eating a meal’ against a studio backdrop more suggestive of green, rolling, English countryside than any African desert.
An inked inscription verso in a period hand reads Egyptienne prenant leur repas / 1869 [Egyptian women eating their meal].
Most of the cartes-de-visite on this page bear inscriptions in the same nineteenth-century hand and are dated 1869. It seems likely that were all originally acquired at the same time and from the same stockist.
condition: Very fine.
