Born Agnes Kelly Robertson, she was the adopted daughter of Charles Kean, one of the greatest actors of the nineteenth century. She began acting at the age of thirteen, and made her first appearance in London in 1851 as Nerissa in The Merchant of Venice at the Princess’s Theatre.

In 1853 she married the famous Irish playwright and actor Dion Boucicault.
