George Cumberland

A carte-de-visite portrait of George Bentinck Macleod Cumberland, seen here in April 1861 when he was fourteen years old.

Born on 22 June 1846, he was the son of Lieut. Col. George Burrell Cumberland and his wife, Margaret Delicia, daughter of Gen. Sir John Macleod. He joined the 42nd Highlander (The Black Watch) as an Ensign on 22 November 1864, rising to the rank of Lieutenant on 29 December 1866 and eventually reaching the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. He served in the Ashanti Campaign (1874) and the Egyptian Campaign (1882).

On 9 June 1894 he married Laura, widow of Sir Francis William Grant (d.1887) and daughter of John Fraser of Netley Park, Surrey.

Photographer unidentified.

condition: The print shows a few small, black flecks in the area of the background but is otherwise
in excellent condition, with very good tonal range. The mount is clean and firm, with crisp edges and
sharp corners.
