Greek girl of Sicily

A hand-coloured carte-de-visite showing a Graeco-Sicilian girl wearing the traditional costume of her region and ethnic background. The Greeks first began to settle in Sicily around 750 BCE. Their most important colony was Syracuse but there were several others of some significance. Many Greek families retained their own customs, which were passed down from generation to generation, a distinct Graeco-Sicilian culture survived well into modern times.

Photographer unidentified.

condition: The print and the hand-colouring are in particularly good condition. The
hand-colouring is fantastically rich and fresh. The mount presents a little wear at one
corner but is otherwise clean, firm and solid.
