A carte-de-visite portrait of Archduchess Maria Christina (1858-1929), taken shortly before her marriage to King Alfonso XII of Spain on 29 November 1879. Born near Brno, in Moravia, she was a daughter of Archduke Karl Ferdinand of Austria and his wife, Archduchess Elisabeth Franziska of Austria. She was King Alfonso’s second wife, his first having died only six months after her marriage. King Alfonso died of tuberculosis in 1885, aged only 27. As his widow, Maria Christina acted as regent during the minority of their son, Alfonso XIII, born posthumously. Queen Maria Christina died in 1929 at the Royal Palace in Madrid.
