| When his army was defeated at Sedan by Prussia in 1870 during the Franco-Prussian War, the Second Empire fell. Napoleon III went into exile in Britain. This portrait of the former Emperor was taken when he was living in exile at Chislehurst in England.
Although unidentified here, the photographers were William and Daniel Downey of Newcastle and London. |
