A silver print mounted as a real photo postcard, showing the Indian dancer Ram Gopal in costume with mask and headdress. All the portraits of Ram Gopal that I have listed on this page were once a part of the dancer’s own collection.

Photographed by the French photographer Thérèse Le Prat (1895-1966), identified by her wetstamp on the reverse Reproduction Réservés / PHOTO / Thérèse Le Prat / 36, Rue Scheffer, Passy 79-82.

Le Prat began by studying the violin but later took up photography, turning professional in the 1930’s. Her work includes reportage, landscapes and portraits of authors, scientists and actors. She published several monographs, most notably Visages d'acteurs (1950), with text by her husband, Philippe Stern, Autres visages d'acteurs (1952), Le masque et l’humain (1959) and Masques et destins (1955), reprinted as Faces and Destinies (1963).

The print measures 5.5” by 3.5” (139 mm by 88 mm).

condition: An excellent print with rich tonal range, although there is one small abrasion in the surface of the print near the lower right-hand corner.
