A hand-coloured albumen print from the 1870’s or 1880’s showing a group of Japanese wrestlers, one of whom is naked, the better to show off his ink.

Titled Wrestlers and numbered B.1035.

Photographer unidentified. The photograph almost certainly belongs to a group of images which Terry Bennett has identified as probably being by either Adolfo Farsari or Kajima Seibei.

The print measures 8” by 10.2” (203 mm by 260 mm) and is mounted on a slightly larger piece of stiff, firm portfolio board, with a border trimmed with pale green tape.

condition: The print shows shows a small amount of fine spotting, but the large white spots on the legs of the man second from the right are actually part of the image.
