An albumen print showing a group of Indians identified as ‘Bengalee Mallees’ by an inked inscription in a period hand in the lower margin.

The Mahle or Mahili are an ethnic people of north-east India.

Photographer unidentified but probably E. Taurines.

The print measures 6” by 7.8” (153 mm by 171 mm) and is mounted on a cut-down section of album page that has been neatly split from its reverse by a professional conservator.

condition: The print has a tear in its upper edge, towards the upper right-hand corner, sustained prior to mounting. The mount presents a small amount of foxing in its margins.
