An unmounted albumen print showing a prisoner confined in a net hanging from a large hook, with a cliff face in the background. Apparently, the context in which the previous owner acquired the photograph strongly suggested that it was taken in Panama. However, I'm reliably informed that in Panama there is no tradition of suspending prisoners in this manner.

The net imprisoning the man was held in place with semi-horizontal ropes; although these have been painted out on the original negative, they are still just visible.

Photographer unidentified.

The print measures 10.5” by 7.7” (266 mm by 195).

condition: On the whole, the print is in excellent condition but there is an illegible word pencilled on its reverse, and the
pencil has made a slight indentation in the print’s surface. which is visible in a raking light.
