A silver print portrait of the Indian dancer Ram Gopal in costume. The photographs of Ram Gopal that I have listed on this page were all once a part of the dancer’s own collection.

Photographed by the French photographer Thérèse Le Prat (1895-1966), identified in the lower right-hand corner of the image.

Le Prat began by studying the violin but later took up photography, turning professional in the 1930’s. Her work includes reportage, landscapes and portraits of authors, scientists and actors. She published several monographs, most notably Visages d'acteurs (1950), with text by her husband, Philippe Stern, Autres visages d'acteurs (1952), Le masque et l’humain (1959) and Masques et destins (1955), reprinted as Faces and Destinies (1963).

The print measures 9.4” by 7.1” (239 mm by 180 mm). The print is mounted on a similarly sized sheet of contemporary paper, and the remains of a tertiary mount adhere to the back of this.

condition: Apart from a small amount of minor edge wear, the print is in excellent condition.
