An albumen print portrait of a Fijian woman with a paddle.

Photographed by Thomas Andrew of Samoa.

A variant pose appears on the website of the National Gallery of Australia. The website gives the information that Thomas Andrew was born in New Zealand in 1855 and that he died in Samoa in 1939. According to the same source, this photograph was taken c.1880s in Samoa.

The print measures 7.9” by 5.3” (201 mm by 134 mm) and is mounted on a slightly larger section of cut-down album page.

condition: The tones of the print drop off slightly towards its upper left-hand corner but the rest
of the image has excellent tonal range.
