A large group of mourners and a priest gathered around an open casket in front of what might be a church. The name ‘Frank Ambrose’ has been added to the ribbon above the coffin on the negative, the surname in mirror writing.

Photographer and location unidentified, but the photograph was bought from an American dealer, so the location is likely to be the United States. The clothes of the mourners would suggest a date in the late 1890's or early 1900's.

The print measures 6.2” by 8.2” (158 mm by 209 mm) and is mounted on a piece of plain Bristol board.

condition: The print has lost tonal range, particularly in the upper half of the image, and the edges of the mount are somewhat chipped.
