A gelatin silver print mounted on stiff paper and housed in a paper folder of the same texture and colour. The photograph shows a man laid out on his death bed. The fabric on the back wall is probably a temporary backdrop improvised by the photographer. If so, he's shown a talent for interior decoration in his arrangement of alternative pleats and swags. The flames of the candles burning in the candelabra on the bedside table appear to have received the attentions of a retoucher.

Photographed by S. Sassel of Dreux, in northwest France, about 44 miles from Paris.

The print measures 3.9" by 5.6" (99 mm by 143 mm) at its widest points.
