The entry for this image in volume 7 of the Silvy daybooks reads Touched reproduction by order of Major Carlyon. A few pages earlier in the same volume there is another reproduction of the same image (entry number 9095), but this version has not been retouched. It is clear from the unretouched version that this was a tarnished daguerreotype brought to Silvy's studio by Major Carlyon to be rephotographed.
