Captain George Thomas Scovell of the 79th Foot (Cameron Highlanders), a recipient of the Indian Mutiny medal. He appears on the 1871 census, spending the night at the Bedford Hotel on Brighton seafront. He was thirty three and unmarried. He gave his birthplace as Middlesex, London, and his profession as 'late Capt. in the Army'. According to an announcement in the Times, on 8 August 1872 George T. Scovell, late Captain 79th Highlanders, eldest son of George Scovell Esq. of 34 Grosvenor Place, married, at St. Albury Church, Caroline Julia Gertrude, only daughter of Archibald Sterling Mathison Esq. of Lockner Holt, near Guildford. |
