| Volume 2, page 38, sitting number 1449.
From the album of Somerville Gurney, a prominent Quaker of Norfolk. Probably either Francis Hay Gurney (1826-1890) or Rev. William Hay Gurney (1827-1898), both sons of Daniel Gurney (1791-1880) and Lady Harriet Jemima née Hay, and elder brothers of Somerville Arthur Gurney. Given the nature of the sitter's attire, he is more likely to be the former, rather than the clerical latter. The census for 1861 shows Francis Hay Gurney, a 35-year-old banker and magistrate, born at North Runcton in Norfolk, living at Thorpe in Norfolk with his wife, Margaret Charlotte. |
