Born Marianne Charlotte Isabelle Peters, her father was William Peters, a banker by profession, who lived at Beckenham Place in Kent, and later at Ashfold House, Slaugham, near Crawley in Sussex. She married Colonel Walter Raleigh Gilbert (1813-1896), of Priory House, Bodmin, Cornwall. Her husband was the Chief Constable of the County of Cornwall, and a Lieutenant-Colonel, in 1861 of the Royal Artillery, but retired on half-pay, and later, of the 1st Cornwall Artillery Volunteers. All eight of the cartes listed on the previous page of this section, as well as the one listed next on this page, all came from an album compiled by Mrs. Gilbert. On 14 August 1862 Mrs. Gilbert’s sister, Constance Maria Georgina Peteres, married Archibald Motteux Calvert. The Calvert’s great-great-granddaughter is Camilla, the present Duchess of Cornwall. |
