According to Hart’s Army List (1864), Hugh Maurice Jones of the 73rd Foot entered the Army as an Ensign (22 April 1846), became a Lieutenant on 9 August 1850, and rose to the rank of Captain on 1 July 1858. On 28 July 1858 he attained the rank of Major, and on 11 February 1862 he was promoted Lieutenant-Colonel.
Major Jones served with 13th Light Infantry in the Crimea from 30 June 1855 and was present at the Seige and Fall of Sebastopol (Medal and Clasp, 5th Class of the Medjedie, and Turkish Medal). He also served in the India Campaign of 1857-1858 (Brevet of Major and Medal).
By 1866 he is listed under “Lieutenant-Colonels who have retired by sale of their commissions’. The entry mentions a connection to the Carnarvon Militia.
