Volume 1, page 132, sitting number 730.

The Silvy daybooks and a pencilled inscription verso in a period hand both identify the sitter as the ‘Marquess of Beaumont’. This is not, however, the Marquess of Bowmont [the courtesy title held by the eldest son of the Duke of Roxburghe], who appears elsewhere in the Silvy daybooks.

The Silvy database suggests that this might be Sir George Howland Beaumont (1828-1882), who succeeded his father in 1845, becoming 9th Baronet Beaumont of Stoughton Grange, Co. Leicester.

James Henry Robert Innes-Ker, Marquess of Bowmont, later 7th Duke of Roxburghe (succeeded 1879). Born 5 September 1839, he married Lady Anne Emily Spencer-Churchill, daughter of Sir John Winston Spencer-Churchill, 7th Duke of Marlborough. He died on 23 October 1892 at the age of 53.
