Identified on the album page as 'Mrs H.R. Aikman' and in the Silvy daybooks as ‘Mrs. H.H.A. Aikman,’ this is probably the wife of Hugh Henry Robertson Aikman. Hugh Henry Robertson Aikman appears on the 1861 census staying at the home of his father-in-law, Thomas Stokes, a magistrate for the County of Leicestershire living at New Parks. Aikman described himself as a ‘Magistrate for the County of Lanark’ and a ‘Landed Proprietor.’ He had married Stokes’s daughter, Mary Joyce Stokes, at St. James’s, Westminster on 21 September 1858. She died on 24 January 1877. From an album compiled by Charles Balfour, a British wine merchant importing sherry and port from Portugal. Born in Edinburgh on 22 August 1822, his father was James Balfour. In May 1852 he married Mary Ermelinda, daughter of Robert Woodhouse of Oporto in Portugal. The couple was married at the consulate then afterwards at the British chapel in Oporto. Charles Balfour died on 12 January 1876. |
