| The second son of Sir John Mordaunt, 9th Baronet, John Murray Mordaunt was educated at Eton and Oxford. In 1866 he married Elizabeth Evelyn Cotes (died 1914). In 1876, in partnership with Thomas Oswald, he briefly went into shipbuilding. In a relatively short time Oswald, Mordaunt and Co. built a number of notable ships.
