Identified verso in a period hand as ‘Prince Bonaparte Canino’ and mentioned in Disdéri’s catalague of 1861 as ‘S.A. le prince Bonaparte de Canino’, given the age of the sitting this is probably Lucien Bonaparte’s grandson, Joseph Lucien Charles Napoléon Bonaparte, 3rd Prince de Canino et Musignano.

Born on 13 February 1824 at Philadelphia, Pennsyvania, he was the son of Charles Lucien Jules Laurent Bonaparte, 2nd Prince de Canino and Zénaïde Laetitia Julie Bonaparte. He succeeded to the title 3rd Prince de Canino in 1857. He died on 2 September 1865 in Rome, aged 41. He was succeeded by his brother.
