A collage of fourteen sitters, all of them Admirals of France, according to two captions, one printed around the lower edge of the oval containing the mosaic, and another pencilled recto in the lower margin.

According to Disdéri’s Catalogue No. 5, published in March 1861, portraits of sixteen high-ranking naval officers were available from the studio. Group together under the heading ‘Amiraux’, they were: Amiral Casi, Amiral Grivel, Amiral Grenffel, Amiral Hamelin, Amiral Gawen [probably Admiral Roberts-Gawen of the British Navy], Amiral Parceval-Deschènes, Contre-amiral Bouët-Willaumez, Contre-amiral Jaurès, Contre Amiral Lebarbier de Tinan, Vice-amiral de Cécile, Baron La Roncière-Lenoury, Amiral Armerot, Amiral Hernoux, Amiral Jurien de la Gravière, and Admiral Labrousse
