A pencilled inscription verso in a period hand identifies the sitter as Mlle. ‘Chalgrin’ of the ‘Opéra’. The sitter is probably a ballet dancer, and is possibly seen here costumed for Prince Poniatowski’s Pierre de Médicis, which premièred at the Salle Le Peletier on 9 March 1860.
