Mlle. Marie Sanlaville was a principal dancer with the Paris Opéra. In 1866 she created the role of the goblin, Zail, in Nuitter’s La Source. She succeeded Eugénie Fiocre as the company’s foremost dancer of travesty roles.

She was one of the ballerinas who often posed for Degas and in 1888-89 he wrote a series of sonnets, one of which was dedicated to her.

She was the mistress of the American artist Julius Leblanc Stewart, at least for a while, and in 1889 the fifty-year-old Count Ludovic Napoleon Lepic died in her bed.
