Earl of Airlie

David Graham Drummond Ogilvy was born in London on 4 May 1826, the son of David Ogilvy, 9th Earl of Airlie and Clementina née Drummond. He was educated at Christ Church, Oxford, where he took a third-class degree in classics in 1847. He succeeded his father on 20 August 1849, becoming the 10th Earl of Airlie. He held a seat in the House of Lords as a representative peer from 1850 until his death in 1881. In 1862 he was invested as a Knight of the Order of the Thistle.

On 23 September 1851 at Alderley in Gloucestershire he married the Honourable Henrietta Blanche Stanley, daughter of Edward John Stanley, 2nd Baron Stanley of Alderley.

He died, aged 55, on 25 September 1881 in Denver, Colorado.

According to his obituary in the Times (27 September 1881): ‘Our Philadelphia correspondent telegraphs that the Earl of Airlie died suddenly on Sunday last at an hotel in Denver City, Colorado, from a chill and congestion. His Lordship was on a visit to Denver with his second son, for whom he had bought a farm. […] His eldest son, Lord Ogilvy, who now succeeds to the earldom of Airlie, is at present in India with his regiment.’
