Nathaniel Barnardiston and Lady Barnardiston
(1832-1916 and 1838-1917)

Born on 24 April 1832, Nathanial Barnardiston was the son of Nathaniel Clark Barnardiston of The Ryes, Little Henny, Essex.

He appears on the 1871 census, aged 38, living at the house of his father. He gave his profession as 'Magistrate' and 'Captain & Adjutant of Rifle Corps.' He gave his place of birth as Little Henny. Also present on the night of the census were his wife, Lady Florence Barnardiston, and their eight children.

When the census was taken in 1901 he was still living at The Ryes, Little Henny. Also present that night were his wife, Lady Florence, and six unmarried children, the youngest of whom, Bertha, was 23 years old.

Nathaniel Barnardiston died, aged 83, on 23 February 1916 at The Ryes near Sudbury. He left an estate valued at £11,186. 

According to a lengthy obituary which appeared in the Essex Newsman (26 February 1916), he 'was descended from one of the most ancient families in the United Kingdom.' Following his education at Harrow, he had served in India and Ireland with the 27th Royal Inniskilling Regiment. He had later been involved with the Suffolk Rifle Volunteers and in 1899 had been given the rank of Colonel and command of the united Volunteer Forces of East and West Suffolk.

He married on 11 February 1858 Lady Florence Legge, daughter of William Legge, 4th Earl of Dartmouth. Born on 3 August 1838 at West Bromwich in Staffordshire, she  died on 27 March 1917.
